The Science:
Magnesium is a coenzyme for more than 300 different metabolic reactions in the body which regulate energy production, electrolyte status, and protein and DNA synthesis. Magnesium also comes in different forms, and each plays a different role in your body–regulating everything from mood to metabolism.
As essential as magnesium is, most people don’t consume enough, with as much as half of the U.S. population subclinical deficient in magnesium. Inadequate magnesium is a driver for poor sleep, chronic disease, blood sugar imbalance, and cardiovascular disease (1).
Magnesium oxide contains the most elemental magnesium of the available magnesium supplements and is widely used for relaxation and sleep support. Magnesium oxide has been shown to support better quality sleep by increasing sleep time and supporting the production of melatonin (2).
Dimagnesium malate plays a central role in energy production, activating the body’s energy currency–ATP–providing support for muscles and overall stamina. Magnesium malate also contains malic acid, which has shown to be beneficial in the management of muscle pain and fatigue (3).
Chelated magnesium is bound to highly bioavailable amino acids which easily deliver magnesium to target cells across the gut wall and into the bloodstream via a protein carrier (4). Magnesium bisglycinate chelate and magnesium glycinate glutamine chelate deliver magnesium via the amino acid glycine.
Glycine supports nervous system function, collagen synthesis, sleep, and antioxidant synthesis (5).
Another bioavailable form, magnesium aspartate has been shown to support a healthy blood sugar balance through its effect on glucose and energy metabolism (6).
Magnesium citrate promotes a healthy and stable mood, in addition to mental relaxation and calm. In small doses, magnesium citrate can have a mild stool softening effect, as it draws water to the large intestine, softening stool and making it easier to pass.
