Combining the Chinese medicine herb Astragalus with Vitamin C and zinc, this is an immune builder, true to the EastWest® way of immune support and vitality.
Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system.
Long used in Chinese medicine for immune support, has been shown to improve T cell mediated immunity.
Helps to thin respiratory secretions.
The Science:
The Defender contains easily absorbing zinc citrate, which plays a role in more than 200 enzymatic reactions required for immune function. Antioxidant vitamin C supports healthy levels of oxidative stress within the body, which plays a role in a normal inflammatory response.
Astragalus Powder (Astragalus propinquus) (root) is a mainstay in traditional Chinese medicine dating back approximately two centuries. Astragalus supports healthy T-cell mediated immunity, and immunoglobulin (antibody) production, and provides beneficial polysaccharides which have been shown to play a role in the reduced activation of proinflammatory cytokines as part of an immune response (1). Astragalus supports healthy upper respiratory function and naturally contains beneficial phytonutrients astragaloside, flavonoids, and saponins which have free-radical scavenging abilities (1)(2).
Zinc (as Zinc Citrate) is an easily absorbed, bioavailable form of zinc, which is an essential mineral in human growth, DNA synthesis, and immune function. Adequate zinc is necessary for more than 200 enzymatic reactions required by the body, not the least of which is proper immune function. Zinc regulates gene expression of IL-2 which regulates activity of white blood cells which are responsible for the body’s immune response. Many immune signaling molecules, including T helper cells, are zinc-dependent and are adversely affected during zinc deficiency, resulting in a decreased immune response. Zinc supplementation has been shown to play a role in normal levels of oxidative stress, and the modulation of inflammation (3).
Vitamin C (as Ascorbic Acid) plays a role in the healthy function of the immune system by supporting functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system. Vitamin C is considered essential in that the human body does not make it, so food sources or supplements are required. Vitamin C is highly concentrated in ‘phagocytic’ cells which are responsible for ingesting harmful pathogens, as well as playing a role in the healthy proliferation of B- and T-cells. Vitamin C requirements may be even higher during illness due to enhanced inflammation and metabolic demand, and deficiency results in greater susceptibility to infection (4).
