The Science:
This powerful support for healthy hair growth is packed with biotin, Ayurvedic botanicals, and nourishing amino acids.
In addition, B vitamins and magnesium promote the metabolism of amino acids (like keratin and collagen), healthy thyroid function, and DNA production and repair. B6, folate, B12, and iron support the health and production of red blood cells, which deliver nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles.
Organic Fo-Ti (root) Polygonum multiflorum. Known in traditional Chinese medicine as He Shou Wu, this herb has long been used to support hair growth. Fo-ti root increases the expression of proteins involved in the anagen (or growth) phase of a hair follicle, increasing the time each hair spends in its growth phase (1).
Fo-ti has also been shown to modulate the effects of DHT which can contribute to male-pattern hair loss.
Organic Amla (root) Emblica officinalis is an Ayurvedic staple rich in vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients which support hair growth. Vitamin C in amla helps to absorb iron, and provides precursors for collagen production, stimulating both hair growth and strength (2). Polyphenols in amla modulate free radical damage that can block hair growth and cause hair follicles to experience faster aging.
Biotin is a crucial part of energy metabolism and creating enzymes which play a role in healthy hair and skin. Studies have linked biotin deficiency with thinning hair and found improvement after adding a biotin supplement (3, 4).
L-cysteine. Hair length and hair thickness are both determined by the amino acid, l-cysteine.
Keratin, the main ingredient within the hair shaft and exterior of the hair, depends on the presence of L-cysteine to form the spirally twisted fibers which make up each hair strand (5). Healthy keratin protects against breakage and is responsible for strength, thickness, and shine.
Thiamin (as Thiamin HCl). Unable to be synthesized by the body, thiamin is an important component to maintain hair thickness, and deficiencies correlate with progressively thinning hair.
Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxal-5-phosphate) is the most crucial B vitamin for mediating stress response in the body, which can prematurely push hair follicles into a shedding state. During times of stress, metabolic demand for B6 increases, which can contribute to increased hair loss if sufficient amounts aren’t present. In one study, B6 has been shown to reduce hair loss and improve hair quality (6).
Pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P) is the metabolically active, fully methylated form of B6 which increases l-cysteine incorporation into keratin to promote the growth of stronger, thicker hair (6).
Folate (as [6S]-5-Methyltetrahydrofolic acid from Quatrefolic®). Commonly only found in supplements in its synthetic form, this highly bioavailable form of folic acid is structurally identical to the active form required by cells. Together with Vitamin B12 (as Methylcobalamin), this combination of B vitamins assists in the production of oxygen-rich blood cells to deliver nutrients to the scalp, and promote healthy thyroid function, a main driver of hair loss. This fully metabolically active form of B12 bypasses inefficient conversion processes, allowing it to be utilized by cells. Those consuming a vegan or vegetarian diet containing B12 analogues may need to pay special attention to this hair-boosting nutrient.
Iron (as Fe Glycinate). Iron deficiency and anemia continue to be the most significant nutrient deficiency worldwide. Due to poor absorption in the gut, heavy menstrual cycles, or a poor diet, a lack of iron restricts the ability of red blood cells to carry nutrients to the hair and scalp (7).
Magnesium (as Mg Glycinate) is responsible for the division and growth of cells, and for protein synthesis in the body. Since hair and nails are made of proteins, magnesium aids in hair growth, and protects the hair from inflammation states which can cause increased hair fall (5).
