In Spring we often feel naturally motivated to make positive changes – but it can be difficult to know where to begin! In this simple guide we’ve outlined some easy, enjoyable tips to help you clean and refresh body and mind – as well as your external surroundings.
1. Declutter your physical belongings
When we declutter our lives in a physical sense, we feel the benefits energetically and emotionally. Most of us live with too much ‘stuff’ – and the clutter we see around us can easily cloud the mind and make it difficult for us to focus. Spend some time re-evaluating your belongings and decide only to keep the things that are useful or well-loved. In a metaphysical sense, clearing out the old makes space for new, better things to come into our lives – not in the form of more ‘things’, but instead in the form of positive developments such as a clearer mind, improved work/life balance, or a more open creative flow. It’s also said to bring harmony according to the ancient principles of Feng Shui.
Decluttering can feel like an overwhelming task, especially if you have a house full of things to go through (for families with kids this increases ten-fold). It’s best to work methodically, one section at a time, making sensible piles of what to keep and what to let go of. Ask a friend or family member to help you if the task still feels too daunting to tackle alone – and check out Marie Kondo’s best-selling book or the Netflix series to get seriously inspired ahead of your decluttering journey.
2. Clear out your supplements
Supplements do have a best before date – so if you’ve been stashing stacks of pills and forgetting to take them, or simply decided against taking a certain type that didn’t agree with you, it’s time for a clean-out. If you are taking supplements on a regular basis, take some time to re-evaluate what’s working for you (and what isn’t working so well any more). Our needs constantly change, so if you’re taking the same set of supplements you started a year ago, you may need to take a fresh look at what you are currently using and whether it’s still making a difference or not. What are your needs now? Are there new supplements you may need to introduce to replace the ones you no longer need?
Be mindful when shopping for supplements, too – not all supplements are created equal, and it’s important to source high quality, premium blends formulated without harmful ingredients such as fillers and toxins and always consult with your physician before incorporating anything new.
3. Detox your beauty regime
Many people’s beauty routines are actively contributing to their ill health, without them knowing. Toxins in beauty products are a significant issue, especially when it comes to women’s health. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (or EDCs for short) mimic the natural hormones in the body, whilst plastic packaging also adds to the weight of daily exposure which can result in hormone imbalance and fertility issues. Some of these toxins have been linked to obesity and cancer and build up over time in the body, resulting in long-term health disturbances.
Spring is a great time to sort through your bathroom cabinet and make-up bag. Throw out any products you no longer use or that are past their sell-by date. Then start to mindfully restock, researching natural, toxin-free treats to replace the old products you’ve thrown away. After just a few weeks of use you should see a difference in the health of your hair, skin and overall vitality levels.
4. Eat clean and fresh (with a focus on seasonal produce)
Springtime is the time to eat fresh, local, seasonal produce – with an emphasis on light, plant-based dishes such as kitchari, a rice dish made with lentils and vegetables, stir-fries and salads. Lower your intake of dairy, red meats and starchy foods – as always, processed, refined foods are to be consumed in moderation.
Dishes like fish with vegetables and quinoa, lentils or rice, simple soups made with bone broth and leafy greens and salads all sit well during spring months.
5. Clean up your sleep hygiene
Sleep is an essential but often under-rated aspect of health – both physically and emotionally speaking. We need consistent, good-quality sleep in order to function optimally – but sleep also informs our delicate balance of hormones, digestion and mood. Sleep hygiene is simple but not always easy to practice as it involves replacing some not-so-helpful habits with new, sleep-friendly routines, such as turning off devices an hour before bed and waking up at the same time each day. There are other things you can do too – such as ensuring your room isn’t too hot (or cold) at night, using an
essential oil pillow mist with soothing scents and investing in heavy curtains to keep your room fully dark, especially if you have bright street lights outside your property.
